Stay @ Glen Avon

A Quintessential Farm Holiday

Glen Avon Farm is an 1820s family farm set in the heart of the Eastern Cape.

The two self-catering units, Garden View and Hart Cottage are located on the The Old Homestead of Glen Avon, whilst Pecan Cottage is ‘over the way’ at our parents’ homestead, The Retreat. The two establishments are a stone’s throw from each other, and although further to drive between the two, it’s a quick 2-minute stroll through a pasture and over a quaint log bridge. Great for multi-family holidaying! Since installing our solar panels, we are now off-grid for the most part and thus loadshedding free. All units are equipped with Wi-Fi for your convenience and enjoyment.

Our History

If history is your thing then you’ll have lots to see and learn here at Glen Avon as it is an 1820s settler farm.

The history of Glen Avon is that of Robert Hart who was regarded as being the “Father of the 1820 Settlers”.

Who was Robert Hart? In 1795 he was an 18 year old private in the Argyllshire Highlanders when the regiment disembarked at Cape Town. The regiment served for a while on the Cape frontier until Britain returned the Cape to Holland where after it returned to Britain.

Experiences

You can never be bored at Glen Avon Farm!

For the more active there’s plenty mountain biking trails, birdwatching, a bakkie ride to the Glen Avon Waterfall and the choice of 3 marked walking trails to choose.

If youre keen to fish then this is the place! We have 2 trout (fees apply) and 2 bass fishing dams (on the house if you stay with us). If you’ve got children then watching the morning milking and walk with Greg around the pastures to check on the animals are a must!

Events & Specials

MAY
MADNESS

May is an exceptionally beautiful autumn month here on the farm but is usually quiet from a guest perspective (having just had school and Easter holidays no doubt!). So we’d like to offer an extra night on the house for people staying 2 nights. If you stay 4 nights then you’ll get another free night too and so it goes…

BEDFORD COUNTRY GARDENS

Many farms and homes in and around Bedford open their gardens to the public to stroll through and enjoy various events during the festival weekends.

The Bedford Country Gardens event has a route that stretches up into our valley. Although my garden is not open for viewing, but my neighbours at ‘The Retreat’ Glen Avon and ‘The Orchards’ are. Instead of seeing my garden, why not pop in for a Glen Avon Mill Tour. Cost is R50pp. The mill will be open for a tour from 10am-4pm, but we will only run the mill at the following times: Friday 20th October: 14:30-15:30. Saturday 21 October: 11:30-12:30; 14:30-15:30. Sunday 22nd October: 11:30-12:30. Friday 3rd November: 114:30-15:30 Saturday 4th November: 11:30-12:30; 14:30-15:30. Sunday 5th November: 11:30-12:30.

Come join us for parkrun every Saturday at 8am for a 5km timed walk / run. It starts and finishes at the Somerset East golf course. Its arguably one of the most scenic routes you’ll ever run / walk. The trail takes you through forest, along dam walls and crisscrosses mountain streams so if the route doesn’t take your breath away, the beauty will. Stopping to take in the views is a great excuse for a slower time 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions

What do we farm at Glen Avon farm?

Dohne-Merino Sheep, a mix of Beefmaster and Brangus Cattle, and Angora goats.

We are more geared to self-catering but if you ask us in advance, I generally can assist you with catering.

We’re located 13km from town – 7km ground road and 6km tar.

You can fish, hike, walk, swim, paddle, bird watch, mountain bike, offroad bike and stargaze.

We’ve spotted 276 bird species over a one-year period. Obviously, spring and summer are the most chirpy but don’t write off the odd special being spotted in the quieter months. Ask us for a bird list.

Generally no, unless by prior arrangement. We are a small-stock farm and even though you think you know your dog, when presented with a temptation dogs can do the unexpected. They are your pets, but they are still animals with animal instincts. We’ve had trouble in the past and prefer to avoid similar situations.

Yes, but not if its rained within a day of wanting to go and there’s been no sunshine to dry up the road. Vehicles may get scratched by branches  and they need to have very good clearance.

4000m above sea level.

If you are staying with us, we sort out gate fees, keys and directions for you. If you’re not staying with us you make arrangements with Alan Hobson (WhatsApp him on 082 4422884).

What can I do in Somerset East/Nojoli? There’s the Walter Battiss Art Museum which is a phenomenal tribute to the Somerset East born artist; there’s the Somerset East Museum which is one of the oldest residences in Somerset East and depicts the lives of the Dutch Reformed Church ministers that resided in the house. It also showcases contemporary exhibitions. There are a few really pleasant restaurants (On Main, Oom Wessel Se Plaasstal, The Blue Lizard), a few deli/coffeeshops (Somersetler, Karoo Coffee, Somerset Hotel), and the African Wildlife Artistry taxidermy business which has an amazing display of taxidermized creatures. Spar is your biggest grocery store. There’s a home industry called Self-help which bakes delicious goods too.

ood R30 per bag, but you’re welcome to bring your own too.
